Slovenia starts its chairmanship of the Open Skies Consultative Commission
Statement by Ambassador Andrej Benedejčič, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Slovenia, at the 74th Session of the Open Skies Consultative Commission, Vienna, 26 September 2017
Colleagues, Ladies and Gentlemen,
I would like to welcome you all to today's first plenary meeting of the 74th Session of the Open Skies Consultative Commission under the Slovenian Chairmanship. Having said this, I also cannot but use this opportunity to thank once again our Slovak colleagues for all their work during the previous, 73rd Session of the Open Skies Consultative Commission.
Slovenia became a State Party of the Treaty on Open Skies in September 2004. This is the second time, after 2006, that we Chair the Open Skies Consultative Commission. We are convinced that despite some current implementation issues the Open Skies Treaty is one of the key pillars of arms control in the OSCE region. Indeed, in our view, it has been one of the most effective mechanisms contributing to strengthening peace, stability and co-operative security in the Euro-Atlantic region, by promoting greater openness and transparency in military activities.
That is why it is so important that all States Parties comply fully with their obligations and the spirit of the Treaty. I therefore look forward to constructive and fruitful discussions during this and future meetings under our chairmanship.
