Slovenia encourages Director General Amano to continue with his gender mainstreaming efforts

Statement by Ambassador Andrej Benedejčič, Permanent Representative and Governor from Slovenia, at the meeting of the IAEA Board of Governors, on the Appointment of the Director General (Agenda Item 7), Vienna, 8 March 2017

Mr. Chairperson,

I would like to take this opportunity to warmly congratulate the Director-General, Mr. Yukia Amano, on his appointment for a third term at the helm of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Since 2009, Mr. Amano has continuously demonstrated strong leadership.  This has ensured that the Agency has been able to tackle a number of complex challenges that it had to face in the past years.  In Slovenia, we therefore believe that his reappointment will ensure the necessary continuity of the ongoing work and further strengthen the Agency's contribution to global peace, security and development.

My capital also believes that Mr. Amano has played an important role in increasing the proportion of women in senior positions at the Agency in the past eight years.  As we celebrate the International Women's Day, it is therefore worth remembering that men have an important role to play in breaking the artificial barriers that still confront women.  We therefore encourage Mr. Amano to continue with his gender mainstreaming efforts.

Mr. Chairperson,

Before concluding, let me say that my authorities still remember the visit of Mr. Amano to Slovenia in 2015.  He impressed his interlocutors both with his political experience and wisdom, as well as with his technical knowledge and expertise.  I would therefore like to use this opportunity to assure him of my country's continuing support and to reiterate our strong willingness to cooperate with him closely also during his third term in office.

Thank you.
